Connecting Generations

Two Generations. Something to Give Each Other.

Older adults have stories, experience, perspective, and wisdom. Young people bring energy, curiosity, new ideas, and connection to the world around them.

Light The Way believes our communities are stronger when those generations aren't separated from one another.

These programs aren't simply about volunteering. They're about creating opportunities for people who might never otherwise meet to know each other, learn from one another, and build relationships across generations.

Our Student Programs

Two Ways to Build a Connection

Light The Way is beginning with two programs designed to bring students and older adults together in simple, meaningful ways.

01
5th Grade Program

Pen Pal Program

A simple letter can become the beginning of a friendship. Fifth-grade students are matched with older adults and exchange letters throughout the school year.

  • Approximately one letter each month
  • One-to-one student and senior connections
  • Writing, storytelling, empathy, and conversation

Grades 10–12

Silver Cord Senior Volunteer Program

High school students give their time through companionship, conversation, shared activities, and simple acts of service while building relationships with older adults.

  • Flexible volunteer opportunities
  • Silver Cord service-hour opportunities
  • Connection, companionship, service, and learning
